Car cleaning and car detailing overlap. Cleaning usually describes removing dirt from a vehicle; detailing suggests a more thorough service with attention to individual surfaces and finishing steps. In New Zealand, you will also see “car grooming” and “car valet”. The useful difference is in the package inclusions, because these names alone do not tell you exactly what work you are buying.
At Chris & Co., the choice is straightforward: interior only, exterior only, or a full detail covering both. Premium combines interior and exterior cleaning. Platinum adds deeper interior cleaning and additional exterior treatments. Here is how to choose based on what your car needs.
Start with the part of the car that needs attention
A car can need an interior clean even when the outside looks tidy. Think of the seats, carpets, windows and surfaces you use on every drive. If those are your main concern, an interior car clean is the relevant place to start.
Our Interior Only package is NZ$75. It includes vacuuming, carpet and seat cleaning, inside windows, interior doors and surfaces, plus door jambs and boot cleaning. It focuses on the cabin; it does not include an exterior wash.
The reverse also applies. If the cabin is already in good shape and your priority is the outside, our Exterior Only package is NZ$75. It includes pre-wash foam and rinse, a hand wash and dry, wheel wash and iron removal, wheel shine, outside windows, door jambs and boot cleaning, and fuel-cap cleaning.
The key price distinction is interior OR exterior. The NZ$75 option buys one of those services, rather than both together. That makes it worth deciding where you want the attention before comparing the full-detail packages.
What does a full car detail include?
A full detail brings the inside and outside into the same service. At Chris & Co., the Premium Detail at NZ$119 combines the interior and exterior cleaning described above.
This is the package to compare when both the cabin and exterior need attention. It covers seats and carpets as well as the exterior wash, wheels and glass, so you do not need to choose one side of the car.
“Full detail” does not mean every treatment a detailer could possibly offer. Read the inclusion list for the specific package. In our range, steaming, extraction, clay-bar treatment and wax are Platinum additions. Premium already includes carpet and seat cleaning; those further Platinum steps should not be assumed to be part of every interior clean.
How is Platinum different from Premium?
The Platinum Detail at NZ$179 includes everything in Premium and adds:
- Clay-bar contamination removal.
- Exterior wax and a hydrophobic exterior coating.
- Trim restoration.
- Interior steaming and extraction.
- Fabric and leather deep cleaning.
These are the differences to focus on when comparing Premium and Platinum. If you are seeking interior extraction or steaming, Platinum is the package that lists them. If you want the wash followed by additional exterior treatment, Platinum is also where the clay-bar, wax and coating inclusions sit.
Be precise about the words used. A hydrophobic exterior coating is listed, but that is not a promise of a ceramic coating or a particular protection lifespan. Likewise, these packages do not list machine polishing or paint correction. If a particular mark or finish is your main concern, explain it to Chris before deciding which service fits.
Cleaning, grooming or detailing: compare the work
When comparing a car wash with a full groom, start with three questions: does it cover inside, outside or both; which cleaning steps are included; and does it include any further surface treatment?
